Nursing Programs in Baton Rouge

So today, I wanted to provide a more informative post than usual. I’ll be discussing the different nursing programs available within Baton Rouge that will let you sit for the NCLEX-RN. The NCLEX-RN is a licensure exam that must be passed in order to call and work as a nurse within the United States. Here, all students must pass an accredited program before the state Board of Nurses will allow them to sit for the test.

In the city of Baton Rouge, you have several programs that allow you to sit for the NCLEX following completion. I’ve listed below the most well known and commonly sought programs in Baton Rouge.

  1. Baton Rouge Community College, School of Nursing
  2. Baton Rouge General, School of Nursing
  3. Franciscan Missionaries of our Lady University, School of Nursing (Formerly Our Lady of the Lake College)
  4. Louisiana State University, School of Nursing*
  5. Southeastern Louisiana University, School of Nursing*
  6. Southern University, School of Nursing

There are even more programs if you consider the whole state of Louisiana, but I wanted to focus in on the ones that were close to me and the ones I had the most time to research. The only exception to that would be LSU which is actually located in New Orleans at the LSU Health Center with the rest of the Allied Health professional schools. However, LSU is a special case because the main campus where the bulk of the prerequisites are taken is actually located in Baton Rouge.

SELU is actually located in Hammond which is about a hour drive from Baton Rouge, I’ve met a number of people who just commute.

All the programs I’ve listed below are accredited.

Baton Rouge Community College (BRCC), School of Nursing
Associate Degree of Science in Nursing, 2.5 Years

BRCC has two different degree paths to getting the ASN. The first is your traditional 2.5 year Associate Degree program, and the second is a LPN bridge program for people who are already in a nursing track. The nursing program application period is open once a year usually running the entire month of January and ending the first Friday of February. Students are required to turn in their application packet in person. 60 students are chosen per application cycle and based on a random lottery system, half start that fall and the other half in the spring.

Application Requirements:
  –  2.8 GPA minimum requirement on prerequisite courses
  –  75 minimum on all HESI A2 testing categories

Baton Rouge General, School of Nursing
Bachelors of Science in Nursing, 4 Years

BRG is actually a local hospital that has a teaching portion. They had a 2 year ADN program, but starting 2019, their program has been changed into a BSN program in partnership with another university (William Carey University). Due to the huge changes, I do not have very much information about this new updated program. What information I do have is what I’ve pulled from WCU’s own page. Prior to the conversion to a BSN program, they accepted 40-45 students per application cycle.

Application Requirements:
  –  2.75 GPA minimum requirement on prerequisite courses
  –  67 minimum composite score on ATI TEAS

Franciscan Missionaries of our Lady University, School of Nursing (Formerly Our Lady of the Lake College)
Bachelor Degree of Science in Nursing, 4 Years

This is actually one of the largest and most popular programs in Baton Rouge. It is worth stating that this is a private program and more expensive compared to other schools but a great option if your academic history is not amazing. However, I would be cautious about applying into this program as their NCLEX pass rates have not been the best for what you would be paying.

Application Requirements:
  –  2.75 GPA minimum requirement on prerequisite courses
  –  Achieve category of proficient* or higher on ATI TEAS

Guaranteed Acceptance (WIN Acceptance):
  –  3.0 GPA minimum requirement on prerequisite courses
  –  All prerequisite courses taken at FRANU/OLOL
  –  Achieve category of proficient* or higher on ATI TEAS

FRANU does not actually define what their criteria are for scores to be considered proficient.

Louisiana State University (LSU), School of Nursing
Bachelor Degree of Science in Nursing, 4 Years

LSU has 2 different types of BSN programs. The first is your traditional 4 year degree path, the second, Career Alternative RN Education (CARE), a 22 month accelerated degree in Nursing. The latter is for people who already have a bachelors degree that want to pursue nursing.

Application Requirements:
  –  3.0 GPA minimum requirement on prerequisite courses
  –  80 minimum composite on HESI A2
  –  Written essay
  –  Interview

CARE applicants are also expected to submit 2 written endorsements, academic and professional.

Southeastern Louisiana University, School of Nursing
Bachelor Degree of Science in Nursing, 4 Years

I actually don’t have much information about this program. I know it’s a very strong competitive program known for graduates who make great nurses. For traditional undergraduate students, the application deadline is September 1st and all accepted students start their first semester in the Spring. SELU also has the option of an accelerated bachelors, LPN-RN track, and and RN-BSN track.

Application Requirements:
  –  3.0 GPA minimum requirement on prerequisite courses

Southern University, School of Nursing
Bachelor Degree of Science in Nursing, 4 Years

Probably the most popular nursing program in Baton Rouge, I also believe it’s one of the oldest nursing programs available in this area. SU is a HBCU and has one of the most active and supportive alumni and academic fraternity communities. This program generally takes in approximately 80 students per application cycle.

Application Requirements
–  2.6 GPA minimum requirement on ALL university coursework
–  C minimum on all nursing prerequisites
